Introduction

The Catholic Church in China Today

While we recently celebrated the Decade of Centenaries we should perhaps have better remembered that one of the events which occurred in Ireland a century ago was the foundation in 1917 of the Maynooth Mission to China, now known as the Columban Missionaries, of Dalgan Park in Co. Meath. From the time of their foundation up to the early 1950’s when they had to leave the country, most of their work was directed at China. Fr. Eamonn O’Brien is a Columban priest who has been visiting China since 1979 and worked there for twenty years. He has been involved in particular in helping with the foundation in recent years of a new monastery of Augustinian nuns which is also running a home for the elderly. In this lecture he will give an overview of the position of the Catholic Church in China as a whole at the present time.
