Irish monks rendered a great service to European history and culture in general with their work, standing up as the true actors of the European medieval culture. They brought also to Europe perennial values, Christian hope and an Irish style of Christianity. Their monasteries became the storehouse of the past and the birthplace of the future (Card. H. Newman).
